yellow flowers with green stems, a Spartium 'Spanish Bloom'

Anxious Bug

Sherlyn Beccera

You don’t belong here.

Nuisance.
Nauseous.
Never-ending bug.

No matter how you scrape
at my stomach flesh,.
You won’t leave—You can’t.
Panicked scratches leave
gashes of anguish
behind.

Seething stomach burns bleed out.
Worry swallows a
skin-deep vortex in my chest.

Prickles of spartium sprout:
Noxious
Revulsive
Weeds.
Out from its shrub roots:
Tearing open my stomach burns.
Dancing with my hollow vortex.
Crawling into my throat,
to taste my fervid fear.

It spills
spills
spills
out.

Finally,
breathe.
Breathing spring.
Spring breathes.
Roots regrow & snowdrops bloom.
Innocuous
Tender
Flowers.

You belong here.

Stay with me.
Stop!
Stop!!

Stop scattering!!!
You can’t spoil its roots!!!!
Don’t! Don’t! Don’t!

You gnaw till the leaves cry
and the white petals drop to its feet!

A child
begging for another chance!
Can’t you hear!?
Won’t you listen?

Again…Here.
I
am
here.

You are here:

Stealing my breath
As bitter weeds sprout.
Swallowing whole, a vicious vortex.
Chalky water sloshing in my throat,
coating my throat with fear.

You don’t belong here.

Nuisance.
Nauseous.
Never-ending bug.
